Turmeric Brings Summer Heat Relief

The Pitta summer is upon us. According to Ayurveda, fire is one of two key elements that govern the Pitta dosha – and summer, too. Warmer temperatures, inflammation and increased irritability are hallmarks of this fiery time of year. In order to maintain balance in our bodies, minds and relationships, we must pay special attention to the pitta dosha in the summer months.

Why balance pitta in the summer?

Ayurveda (which literally translates to the “science of life”) asserts that a body in balance creates a feedback loop of positive, healthy behaviors. But imbalance causes us to reach for things (e.g., food, substances, behaviors) that don’t serve us. The less balanced we become, the harder it is to restore balance again.

Watch out for these symptoms of Pitta imbalance:

  • Short temper
  • Acid reflux
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Skin rashes
  • Hormonal issues
  • Pain in the eyes/temples

Using turmeric to balance Pitta

Turmeric is an ancient spice that can cool the inflammatory fire that causes many Pitta ailments. Inflammation is the culprit behind many daily health complaints and chronic diseases. While people commonly reach for ibuprofen to reduce inflammation, turmeric is proven to produce a similar effect in the body. Here are a few tips to incorporate turmeric into your diet:

  1. Take a daily turmeric supplement
Zira Mind and Body recommends 500 mg of turmeric each morning to fight inflammation.  Read up on PureAyurveda’s Turmeric capsules and discuss with your doctor whether these are a good fit for you.
  2. Creatively incorporate turmeric into your drinks
Many creative recipes for turmeric mocktails, tonics and teas are available; try this anti-inflammatory lemon turmeric tonic for an unusual twist on lemonade.
  3. Turmeric: it’s what’s for dinner
Turmeric is often overlooked in our weekly meal plans. You can add it to most anything for an added dose of anti-inflammatory antioxidants. These turmeric-roasted Brussels sprouts are Zira Mind and Body tested and approved.
